FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
(Also known as the infamous FAQs :p )

Here is a selection of answers to questions I get asked most often. Chances are you'll find an answer to your own!

+ How do you pronounce "Kmye"? Where does your name come from, anyway? +
"Kmye" is pronounced Ka-mee-ye. :)
It's a contraction of my real first name, Camille. I've been using this nickname ever since I first got on the Internet, an online friend I made at the time nicknamed me "Kmye-chan", and the name stuck. Kmye Chan.

+ Can I have your MSN contact info? Can we chat sometime? +
I'm sorry but no. I use instant messengers only to keep in touch with family and IRL friends, and I want to keep it that way. Plus, I can't afford to spend much time chatting on the internet...!

+ How did you learn to draw? What drawing classes have you taken? +
As far as I remember, I've always been drawing... Around 6 I was eyeballing Disney characters almost perfectly!
I took about a year of drawing classes when I was around 10, where I learnt the basics of traditional media, perspective, still lives, etc. It comes out very handy at times now, even though it was a totally different work from what I do nowadays. After that, nothing more than the regular art classes at school. I almost dropped drawing between 10 and 16, then got back at it around 17, and pretty much taught myself. Observation, hard work and patience are the key! :)

+ Will you teach me how to draw? +
I'm afraid that I'm a dreadful drawing teacher, having no method or technique myself. Besides, I don't think I'm good enough to teach anyone at this point! ^_^

+ What tips would you give to a beginning artist? +
After having been asked this question many many times, I typed a nice fat article on my DeviantART journal about it - you can read it
here.

+ What studies would you advise me to take to become a professional artist? +
Well, given that I haven't taken art studies myself, I'm not of much help here, sorry!

+ What tools do you use for drawing? What programs do you use? +
Well, most of my works, especially all the recent ones, are done with traditional media, with no program involved at all. In such cases, I work with mechanical pencils for sketching, pigment liners for inking, and a mix of alcohol-based markers, watercolours, coloured pencils, colour inks and paint for colouring.
The old digital pictures in my gallery were inked traditionally then coloured or toned with Photoshop 7.0.

+ What brands do you advise for traditional supplies? +
Having not tried many brands myself so far, I would have a hard time to advise you any, but anyway, here are the brands that I use if you'd like to know:
Pigment liners, Indian ink pens >> Staedtler, Unipin, Faber Castell
Markers >> Trias, Copics
Watercolours >> Daler-Rowney (easy to use for beginners) or Winsor-Newton (harder to use but beautifully pigmented)
Pencils >> Caran d'Ache
Acrylics >> Liquitex
Paper >> Arches hot-pressed watercolour paper

+ What inspires you into drawing? +
Basically anything. It's a question of mood! When I'm feeling like drawing, anything can trigger the idea for a new picture. A song heard in the underground, a fabric pattern, a piece of clothing seen in a shop, someone crossed on the street, anything. On the other hand, when I'm not in the mood, it's practically impossible for me to draw something looking halfway decent.

+ Why do you put those horrible copyright notices on your artwork? It just ruins it! +
While I would prefer not to have to watermark my work as well, I'm just getting sick of people who think they can come and grab artwork off my gallery, and then sell it, erase my signature and claim it as their own, or basically use it as free stock. So there. Please don't remove the copyright notices.

+ Do you take commissions? +
Most of the time, no. I'm just too busy, sorry! When I do I usually announce it on my blog, keep your eyes open for opportunities because commission slots are usually full pretty fast. :)

+ Will you draw this character for me for free? I'm sorry, I'm broke! +
And I'm sorry, but so am I! I just can't afford to draw artwork on request, it's just too time-consuming, and supplies cost me a lot of money. I already barely have the time to work on my own stuff and commissions.

+ Can we make an art trade sometime? Or a collaboration? +
Sorry, but I only make art trades and collaborations with people I know really well. And these know who they are, and generally don't need to ask.

+ Can I use your work for [insert reason here]? +
You will find all the relevant info about what I allow and don't allow in my
Terms of Use.

+ I've seen your artwork on [insert site here]... Is that you? +
I only have accounts on
DeviantART and Myspace. I do have accounts on a few other community sites, but with no art uploaded, and that I just use when I need to get in touch with a member there. So if you've seen me or my work anywhere else, chances are that it's NOT me. I'd appreciate if you could let me know then! :)

+ Do you have any artbooks available? +
Not at this point, sorry! I would love to, but I don't think that my work is publishable material at this point... Hopefully someday it will, and when such a day will come, you can be sure it will be announced all over the place around my website! ;)

If you have any more questions, feel free to send me an email! :)
